Large X Decoration Trim around Hat:
I used a yarn needle and the same yarn as the hat.
I started so the top of my Xs would be down 5 rows from the top and each leg of the X was in the fourth hole to right/left and above/below the center of the X.

I came up for my first X in the center hole, then went down where the lower right leg would end, then came back up through center and went down in same place (all the legs of the Xs are done twice to make it thicker) – then come up through center hole again and do right upper leg, then up in center and do left lower leg, then up in center and do left upper leg, then come up in center of next X position and repeat around. Fasten off and weave in ends.

http://crochetkitten.blogspot.com/2012/11/crochet-stockinette.html

Rnd 1:  Ch 1, hdc in same st as you joined in and 1 hdc in each st around, join with sl st in first hdc (60 hdc)

Re-attach your yarn to seam, sl st all the way around hat and bill.

PUFF FLOWER INSTRUCTIONS: Use a J - HOOK

Puff Stitch:  Ch 3, yo, insert hook in same st and draw up a loop, repeat 2 more times in same st, yo place hook in next st and draw up a loop 3 times, yo and draw hook through all loops on your hook, ch 3, sl st in same st. Sl st in next st. 1 puff made.

With J hook make a magic circle and ch 1.

Rnd 1:  Make 12 scs in magic circle, join with a sl st to beginning sc, pull tail to close and weave in short end.

Petals- Make 6 puff stitches and fasten off leaving a long tail to finish center of flower.

Thread long tail into a tapestry needle, sew back and forth across center of flower until a smooth surface is achieved. This is called a satin stitch. For more info you can go here

Place your flower on the seam at brim of hat and take long stitches at the base of your petals to define each petal and attach the flower to your hat.
Pull to back and finish off. Weave in end and cut yarn.

Here is a youtube video of a puff stitch flower, however she does not sl st into the beg and end of each petal as I do.  I think it gives a more defined look to your flower.  But can give you a base!

Red Hat with Brim

By Designers: Gloria Clayton and James Lee Kelley

This pattern uses US/American English Crochet Terms

Hat part is done using most of the pattern from Cotton Candy Spring Hat.
Sport weight cotton, ILTC from Hobby Lobby should work nicely; even though it is considered worsted weight it is very light.

MATERIAL:
J hook and an E hook

SPECIAL NOTE:   I did not join my rounds after the base.  If it is easier for you sl st and ch1 and continue work instead. Be sure to mark ending sts or it is easy to get lost!

SPECIAL STITCHES:
Beginning V-Stitch (BV-st) Ch4, dc in same st or sp as indicated.
V-Stitch (V-st) dc, ch1, dc in same st or sp as indicated.
Shell Stitch (shell) 5dc in same st or sp as indicated.

PATTERN:
With J hook.
Rnd 1 – Ch3, *dc in 3rd from hook, ch1*, repeat between the *s 5 times, join with a sl st into the top of the first dc. (6dc, 6ch1 sps)

Rnd 2 - Ch2, 2dc in same st, *ch2, 2dc in next dc* repeat between the *s 4 times, ch2, join with sl st in top of first dc. (12dc, 6ch2 sps)

Rnd 3 – Ch2, dc in same st, ch2, dc in next dc, ch2, dc in ch2 sp, ch2, * dc in next dc, ch2, dc in next dc, ch2, dc in ch2 sp, ch2*, repeat between the *s 4 times, join with sl st to top of first dc. (18dcs, 18ch2 sps)

Rnd 4 – Ch2, V-st in same st, V-st in each dc around, join with a sl st into the top of the first dc. (18V-sts)

Rnd 5 – Ch2, V-st in first dc of first V-st, V-st in second dc of first V-st, V st in ch1 sp of next V-st, * V-st in first dc of next V-st, V-st in second dc of same V-st, V st in ch1 sp of next V-st*, repeat between the * around. Join with a sl st into the top of the first dc of first V-st. (27V-sts)

BRIM:
With E hook sl st into beg V-st.  ch1, 2 sc, *1 sc into space between V-st, 2 sc in next V-st* repeat between the *s around, sl st into first sc you made. This is the base for your brim.
Rnd 1- Increase round. Ch 1, 2 sc in same sc, *sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc*. repeat between the *s around. Do not join work but mark last sc with st marker or bit of yarn.
Rnds 2 -- 4 - Sc evenly around marking each ending sc as you come around.  On row 4 do 2 sl st in last 2 sc.  Do not fasten off.
Rnd 5 - ch 1 sc in same sc you sl stitched into.  *ch 2, sk 1 sc, sc into next sc* around. Do not join. Mark last sp made.
